The Auckland Grammar Rowing Club (AGRC) dates back to 1952 when rowing was first introduced at Auckland Grammar School and has seen a long history of excellence. This is both in performances at National events and in helping to build young men into strong members of society.
At the National Secondary Schools Championships, our crews have twice won the prestigious Maadi Cup for the Under 18 eights (in 1992 and 2011), as well the Springbok Shield for Under 18 fours (also in 2011).
We have had several athletes earn selection for the Auckland Blues squad, the North Island Under 18 team and the NZ Junior team. Previous Grammar students are currently representing New Zealand at the Under 23 and Elite level as well.
At the same time, several of our young men have found success outside of rowing. We currently have athletes at Harvard and Yale universities, and Olympic gold-medal triathlete Hamish Carter attributes his dedication and discipline to his time with Auckland Grammar Rowing.
Auckland Grammar School and the Auckland Grammar Rowing Club has a proud tradition of developing and nurturing boys from all walks of life by focusing on the Grammar values of pride, focus, respect, synergy, teamwork and determination.
Rowing is a sport that teaches and rewards discipline, dedication and determination - it is the ultimate team sport where every rower in a boat has a crucial role and full commitment is necessary whether competing or training.
While success on water is our ultimate goal equally important is the personal development of our boys - the physical, social and emotional benefits that they gain from participating in rowing, help to propel them into later life encourages them to consistently achieve success.
Parents are often amazed at the positive changes boys make during their first season with the Club. In recent years AGRC has enjoyed growing success in regattas, particularly in the North Island Secondary Schools Championships and the National Secondary Schools Championships (the Maadi Cup).
In 2011 we celebrated winning both the prestigious Maadi Cup and the Springbok Shield which are the ultimate trophies in schoolboy rowing.
In 2012, we became national champions in the Under 16 8+, Under 17 8+ and Under 17 4+ and came second in the Under 18 2-, Under 18 4+ and Under 18 8+. Our haul of 3 golds and 3 silvers at the Maadi Cup was our best result ever and we were also the top boys' school in rowing.
Our success is due to the wonderful efforts and dedication put in by the boys, our coaches and parents and has resulted in increased interest in rowing within the school with more boys enrolling in the Learn to Row programme.
